Marek Norman Composer Clinic
Next Composer Clinic Dates - November 2007 to January 2008 This 6-week program offers writers a unique opportunity to work with one of Canada's most successful musical theatre composers. Marek Norman is an award-winning composer - not to mention actor, singer, producer and teacher. His scores for such shows as Emily, Dracula - A Chamber Musical, and Larry's Party are among the most successful Canadian Musicals of the past 20 years. (You can find a more extensive bio of Marek Norman on his website - www.mareknorman.com). ScriptLab's Marek Norman Composer Clinics are designed to encourage individuality - and to build confidence through technique. They will focus primarily on musical concerns (rudimentary theory, aesthetics, stylistic approach, character development, recapitulation ... etc.), although attention to the broad craft of songwriting will always be present. Each composer will spend at least five hours in group session and four hours in private consultation. (Total: 9 hours) The Clinics are presently designed as follows: WEEK 1: All
participants (up to ten) - 2 1/2 hours.
Each composer will perform two original selections (either song or instrumental). Marek will offer initial observations and present four separate exercise options to the group. Each writer will choose (at least) two of these exercises on which to work and develop over the course of the following four weeks in private (one on one) hour-long sessions. WEEKS 2, 3, 4, and 5: (private hour-long sessions) Each composer will meet with Marek four times over as many weeks, working on the exercises chosen from the initial group session - and further developing the material performed. WEEK 6: All participants - 3 hours Marek will introduce each writer and speak briefly about their work - strengths, weaknesses - and the discoveries made throughout the previous private sessions. Following the individual introductions, each participant will perform two of the pieces developed out of the exercises proposed on Week 1. The Clinics will be offered beginning the week of November 19, 2007, and will conclude the week of January 14, 2008. Participation will be limited, and acceptance into the Clinics will be based on an interview process. Fee: $375 per person.
