name is Christine Brubaker. I'm an actor here in Toronto as well as a
teacher at Humber College. I teach voice and choral singing to
theatre students and it's my second year teaching a new course call
"Singing and Storytelling" where we use songs from the musical theatre
repetoire. Essentially we do scene work with small ensembles 4-6
voices using songs, simple staging and explore the actor/singer
relationship. I actually consider it an acting class rather than a
singing class.
Last year I used songs from Allen Cole's Strange Medicine, a song I wrote from The Trials of John Demjanjuk, a few songs from Candide, Officer Krupke from West Side Story, Three Little Maids from School from Mikado, Brush Up Your Shakespeare from KMK, plus some others. I like to use as much Canadian material as I can. I'm looking for songs for: - small ensembles 4-8 voices - strong story telling/action/pursuit component Christine can be contacted by email. Adrian Marchuk Cabaret: Adrian Marchuk is a Toronto-based actor and producer. He is putting together a cabaret to feature the works of new Canadian composers. The plan is to present the work as a one-nighter with a cast of four in Calgary and then bring it back to Toronto and see if it has a future. If you are interested in submitting material for the cabaret, please email a copy of your work to amarchuk@yahoo.com The focus of the cabaret will be on songs that can 'stand alone' outside of their context in a narrative. Songs of any type (ballads, up-tempos, solos, duets, trios, quartets) are welcome, although not every song received will be used, of course. I'll be asking permission to use the song only for the purposes of the cabaret. This is meant to provide an opportunity for Canadians artists to celebrate our homegrown talents, and to give voice to new composers whose work has not yet found an audience. We want to provide an place for Canadian work to get heard, so that people will be asking 'what is that song?', and the answer will be 'it's by a Canadian composer' . |
